This week I would like you to go to the website Go Blue and take the test to measure your water footprint. As you have seen in the Story of Stuff video, we often do not stop to think about water, since we take it for granted and so we often waste it unnecessarily. Take the water quiz and tell your classmates how you did on the test. What do you think about your score? Are there any areas in you and your family's lives where you can make changes to the amount of water you use?You will have until Tuesday, May 17th to post your comments.

  1. Hi,I was really surprised when I saw my water footprint. It was 96,086 litres only for me per year. For all my family - 288,258 litres.Wow! This result I have without having a pool at home, lawn and dishwasher.I just imagine what will be my footprint, if I had this extras.Water is not only the water that we use directly;it's also the water in the goods that we consume. We should think about how much water goes into the food that we eat also where that food was produced.Together, I think we can save the water and it's the way to save the world.

  2. Good afternoon everyone. Having taken the test and gotten the result (105,553 litres/year) I see my waterfootprint is beneath the Canada's average waterfootprint (125,000). Of course, we always can do better in reducing our water consumption. But, my question is: until when? Or should I say until what consumption amount per person per year? Who can determine it and how? Based on what criteria? From my modest understanding, I can perceive a huge issue: the more people we are, the less water consumption per person per year we will need to have in order to not to exceed the water generation cycle. And, since the population is growing, the human need for water will do either. So what would be the solution? Continuing reducing water consumption per person? And, until when? What would be the minimum acceptable and still considering a dignified life? The same is happening with our general footprint. So, my big question here is: How many people and what kind of individual life is or will be allowed for the sustainability of the planet???

  4. wow!!!!! I am the person who really save the water. After taken the test i got 40,085 litr/year as a footprint. May be this is the result of habbit or practice with not having enough water supply in back home country, but now i can proud of myself. We always consider water as natural free resource so we never think about preservation of water. In reality this is the time to change our concept and assumption.

  5. Hi everyone. I got 80233L/A as my water footprint, which is lower than Canadian average. By reading the tips for saving water, I know that I still can do better. Some of tips seem so small and simple, but they are really efficient. I really care about water saving, because I know the water resource is limited and when I see people somewhere in the world having water shortage difficulty, I feel pity for them. We can't live without water and water is limited for human beings to use, so we don't have excuse for not saving water although we have enough water in Canada. As wise human, we shouldn't wait until fight for water. use, so we don't have excuse for not saving water although we have enough water in Canada. As wise human, we shouldn't wait until fight for water.

  6. Hi everyone, I took the test and my water usage is 94,152 liters of water per year. My score is below the average of Canadian's water usage but I think that this is too much and I can reduce the amount of water I use. Throughout the test, I found out that the bathroom wastes the most amount of water we use. We can't stop taking shower or bushing our teeth but we can change our toilet into dual flush low-flow toilet so that we can save a lot of water. If I change my toilet, I will reduce 31,171 liters of water per year which is nearly one third of my water usage. I will tell my family about that and we will change it soon. As we know that water is very important to our lives and water is limited so it’s the time to save our water. Let’s take action before it too late!

  7. Hello everyone, many people think that water is renewable resource. As a result, they use water negligently, and I do not hesitate to say that I am one of them. However, I should be very conscious after going through these tips. I took test and I use 84,393 litres of water per year. I can reduce this even more but I cannot do it as I am in rented house where laundry machine is very old and less efficient. Based on these tips, I can draw some of the reflections that may be helpful for those who are unware of them. First, I can share these tips with my colleagues, family members and relatives so that they can assist in making surplus of water per year. Second, the facebook that I usually use can be a viable means of communicating these tips. Finally, I will consider these invaluable tips for my day to day life as we human beings often say one thing and do another thing. Therefore, my effort will be to overcome some of the life contradictions in case of water use. I am hopeful everyone will save water for coming generation too.

  8. I have gotten 101,072 liters/person/year footprints in Calgary. I think, I saw my footprint and realized that we consume lots of water although our nature resource not infinitive but our lives need water so, we should make changes that better ways. If I would reduce amount of water, I might help other people. In my opinion I and my family’s lives can make changes to the amount of water we use. In my case, our family usually pours water into bathtub from the tap and then uses little by little to wash our face in Korea. By that time, I thought that situation is weird but now I can understand that one of the way to reduce water. Also it is possible that we wash dishes by hand instead of dishwasher, when we wash and take a shower, the water can re-use to toilet water it can save water. We have to make effective use of our limited natural resources.

  9. Despite the satisfactory result that shows my consumption of 105,266 litres of water per year, which ranks below the Canadian average, we still have to give more efforts in order to reduce our water footprint. The first thing is to get rid of the wrong idea that says "Canada is a country with unlimited natural resources". At home, as family members, we should conserve water by avoiding the long shower periods and shorten the laundry and dishwashing times per week. The other possible thing we can do is to store the used water instead it of dumping it and reuse it again in flushing or washing our cars. However, when it comes to consuming drinking water it might be difficult to lessen the amount of water in this case since Calgary is one of the driest cities in North America, that's what make our city the highest in drinking water consumption.
When we use this amount of water in our lives, we should always remeber that there are many people in the world have no access to water.

  10. Hi evryone, my footprint is 104.072 wich is so high. Before I had never thought I consume a lot of water. I knew I leave the tap on until I brush my teeth or wash the dishes. This is my bad habit on which I must work. In addition, by thinking of other countries where the water is not enough I think I will change this habit and economize more water. Also, I will try to develop good habits in my children about saving water. By doing these there is chance my family to make changes in using water resources.

  11. I have got 73,288 litres of water per year from the quiz. It's about the average European water consumption. Having been educated for years about water issue, I am shocked by some facts when I read through the website. I am the one who has been mentioned that is not aware that many of the foods we eat and the products we buy require water. I had no idea that it takes approximately 1000 kg of water to grow 1 kg of potatoes, 300 litres of water to produce 1 kg of paper and 215,000 litres of water to produce one metric ton of steel. That means our other consumption habits have impacts in water usage as well. I tried to adjust the number of minutes of shower aiming to find a balance between comfort and saving water, and it showed that, by increasing 1 minute of shower, water consumption increases 3467 litres per person per year. If we do some more math, a much clearer picture of how much differences we can make will be built. The purpose of the quiz I think is to help us reduce unnecessary usage of water, but not cease us from living. It is undeniable that we need development, but only in a sustainable way.

  13. Hi class, my water footprint is 84,702 litres/year, even though this result is under the average level in Canada I don't feel so comfortable with it. I wonder how can I make it lower but I don't know how, nevertheless, by teaching my children to save water I'm pretty sure that I will be supporting to make their water footprints lower.

  14. Hi, everyone! I think the test will help us to realize that how much we waste water. I visited Go Blue website and learned about the importance of water so that I am awaking to the need for saving water now. After the test finished, I was surprised and happy because my water footprint score was 98,135 liters/person/year. Usually I thought that I wasted so much water. Then I thought about more ways to save water. So I would like to introduce my ways to save water. There are three methods of saving water. First, the tap turned off while brushing my teeth. Second, cutting my shower time. Third, I will use my washing machine, when it is full. Finally, there are many ways to conserve water through one’s everyday lives and saving water is not that difficult as well so we must practice saving water.

  15. My water footprint is 109.287 which is lower than the average of Canadian’s water usage; however, the number is quite high. How do I reduce my water footprint? First, I should realize that how much I waste running water while I wash dishes each time. Second, I will replace a front-loading washing machine which uses minimum water in the future. It will be cost to me, but there are two benefits, such as save our water and economical on my household water bill. According to “The water Efficient Labelling and Standard website”, it saves almost 30 litres of water per load. Third, it is popular in my country because of easy to do that people put a small bottle of water into toilet water tank to reduce water usage. To take small actions that will change a big difference.

  16. The result of my water usage was 85,891 litres per year. This included 208.3 litres for property, 3536 liters for washing, 1153 litres for kitchen and 80,994 litres for bathroom. During the test, I tried to choose" I turn the tap off" for two minutes when I brushed my teeth, the result is 80,994 litres for bathroom per year. On the other hand, I chose " I leave the tap on" for 2 minutes when I brush the teeth. The result was 93,477 litres for bathroom. Comparing these two results, I realized that even as little as two minutes of running water would have a significant impact on our daily water consumption. I used to let the water run while I am cleaning the dishes. After I read the tips on saving water today, I realized that I am wasting precious water on a daily basis. Now I post this comment, I tell myself that I should take action form now on to decrease the footprint of water consumption by following the tips which were provided to us by the website.

  17. In the test I got 125,515. It is fairly more than the average Canadian in term of water consumption. Compared to the average Canadian consumption, my score will be very high than this amount if I have a car or lawn to water. I was surprised about my score because I have never tried to calculate the amount of water that I consume. The water for me represents peace, energy and life. When I touch the fresh water or I see it running naturally in the mountain for example, I feel a paradise on my hand. Unfortunately, at this level I enjoy also seeing the water running continuously at home, in bathroom, in kitchen to wash dishes,etc... I am using it excessively, but my households are more preserving water than I am. After this result, I think I try my best to reduce my water consumption especially in kitchen when I wash dishes. My households already know about going blue and they use the water reasonably. When I saw this score, a question come out in my mind, if a person consume an average of 125000 liters of water a year, how about industries and their water consumption?. I think, before it is a responsibility for an association, it is an individual responsibility. If everyone reduces his/her blue footprint, then people will be reducing their blue footprint. Therefore, the world will be more blue and the life becoming more charming. The next generations will be proud of us, and will be a good example that we save their blue life. I hope that I will be among the blue people who are useful for the next generations, and I try to run my first commitment about not running water continuously when I am washing dishes. Also, I try to think about the next commitments in order to preserve our water and our planet.

  18. I got 87,456. Firtly, lets talk about the test, i didnt even get the test, every cloumn shows each person per year. so why the first question ask how many people live in one house? and i lived with my aunt's family, so they water the lawn, not me, but i still put the times in that question. futhermore, if everyfamily water the lawn 5 times one year, so the test should devided it into 5 people..... anyways, this final answert was not that correctly. As personlly, what i can say to their family is nothing, they did perfectly in saving water!!! they save the water that they washed the fruits,or vegetables, and use it to clean the floor, or water the lawn. They do laundry maybe abround 16 days, so they can have enough clothing to wash.i think there is nothing they need to change.
